Kinesiology taping, also known as therapeutic taping, is a technique involves applying a specialized adhesive tape to the skin to provide support, stability, and pain relief to muscles, joints, and other tissues. The tape used in kinesiology taping is typically elastic and stretchy, allowing for a wide range of motion.
Therapeutic kinesiology tape is a thin, elastic cotton tape that stretches up to 140% of its original length. It is a latex free material with acrylic adhesive, which is heat activated. The cotton fibers allow for evaporation and quicker drying leading to longer wear time, up to 4 days.
As a treatment process the tape is applied to a patient on a stretch greater than its normal length, it will "recoil" after being applied and therefore create a pulling force on the skin that it is being applied to. The tape used in kinesiology taping is typically elastic and stretchy, allowing for a wide range of motion. The effectiveness of kinesiology taping may vary depending on the individual, the condition being treated, and how it is applied.
It is important that kinesiology taping should be applied by trained professionals who have an understanding of anatomy, proper taping techniques, and specific indications for its use.
There are several benefits claimed for the tape. One of those is correcting the alignment of the joint as well as facilitating the weakened muscle as a result of the tape's recoiling qualities. Additionally, the tape is claimed to lift the skin, increasing the space below it, and increasing blood flow and circulation of lymphatic fluids (swelling).
Therapeutic kinesiology tape that can benefit a wide variety of musculoskeletal and sports injuries, plus inflammatory conditions. Kinesiology tape is almost identical to human skin in both thickness and elasticity, which allows kinesio tape to be worn without binding, constricting or restriction of your movement.
